How to make a ordinary job sound professional without lying
How to make ordinary work sound professional (without lying)
One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make is thinking:
"My job was too simple to impress anyone."
That's usually not true.
Almost every job develops skills that employers value. The goal is to describe your work professionally and accurately—not exaggerate it.
Example 1: Shop Attendant
❌ Weak:
Sold goods
Cleaned the shop
Served customers
✅ Strong:
Assisted customers in selecting products and answering inquiries.
Maintained accurate stock displays and ensured the shop remained organized.
Processed cash and mobile payments accurately while delivering excellent customer service.
Notice that nothing is made up. The same work is simply described in a more professional way.
Example 2: Receptionist
❌ Weak:
Answered calls
Welcomed visitors
✅ Strong:
Managed incoming calls and directed inquiries to the appropriate departments.
Greeted visitors professionally and maintained a positive front-office experience.
Scheduled appointments and maintained accurate visitor records.
Example 3: IT Support
❌ Weak:
Fixed computers
Installed software
✅ Strong:
Diagnosed and resolved hardware and software issues, minimizing system downtime.
Installed, configured, and updated operating systems and business applications.
Provided technical support to users and documented resolved issues.
The Professional Writing Formula
For each bullet point, ask yourself:
What did I do?
How did I do it?
What was the result or purpose?
For example:
Managed inventory records using Microsoft Excel to maintain accurate stock levels.
This is much stronger than:
Updated stock.
A word of caution
Never claim experience or achievements you don't have.
Recruiters often ask follow-up questions during interviews, and many employers verify previous roles. A truthful, well-written CV is always stronger than an exaggerated one.
Today's exercise
Take one bullet point from your current CV and rewrite it using this formula:
Action verb + Task + Result/Purpose
For example:
Coordinated weekly team meetings, ensuring project updates were communicated on time.
The more specific and relevant your descriptions are, the more credible and professional your CV becomes.
