(Explained): The biggest mistake job seekers make when listing work experience
Your work experience section carries the most weight on your CV. Unfortunately, many candidates waste it by turning it into a job description.
The mistake
Suppose you worked as an Administrative Assistant.
Many people write:
Filing documents
Answering phone calls
Scheduling meetings
Preparing reports
These are simply duties. They don't tell the recruiter how well you performed.
What recruiters actually want
Recruiters are asking themselves:
"If I hire this person, what value are they likely to bring?"
Your experience should answer that question.
Instead of listing everything you did, focus on:
Your biggest responsibilities
Improvements you made
Results you achieved
Problems you solved
Before and After
❌ Weak
Administrative Assistant
Answered phone calls
Filed documents
Scheduled meetings
Prepared reports
✅ Strong
Administrative Assistant
Managed executive calendars and coordinated meetings to ensure smooth daily operations.
Maintained accurate digital and physical filing systems for efficient document retrieval.
Prepared weekly operational reports using Microsoft Excel.
Responded professionally to client inquiries and directed requests to the appropriate departments.
Notice that these statements sound more valuable without exaggerating anything.
Another example
❌ Security Guard
Guarded premises
Checked visitors
Wrote reports
✅ Better
Monitored premises to ensure the safety of employees, visitors, and company property.
Verified visitor identities and maintained accurate entry and exit records.
Reported security incidents promptly and completed detailed incident reports.
Again, it's the same job—but presented professionally.
The 5-bullet rule
For each job, aim for 4–6 strong bullet points.
Too few may not show enough value.
Too many can overwhelm the recruiter.
Choose the responsibilities that are most relevant to the job you're applying for.
Today's challenge
Open your CV and look at your most recent job.
Ask yourself:
"Am I listing what I was told to do, or am I showing the value I delivered?"
If you're only listing duties, rewrite them using:
A strong action verb
A clear responsibility
A result or purpose where possible
That's how you turn an ordinary CV into a compelling one.
