Job Overview

A leading organization is seeking an experienced and highly skilled PHP Backend Software Developer to lead the technical development of its custom commercial platform. This full-time onsite role is ideal for software engineers with extensive experience in backend development, system architecture, API integration, and database optimization.

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining secure, scalable, and high-performance backend services while translating complex business requirements into clean, maintainable, and testable code.

Position Summary

The PHP Backend Software Developer will oversee backend architecture, develop core platform modules, build RESTful APIs, implement business logic, integrate third-party services, optimize databases, and contribute to innovation through emerging technologies. The role also requires close collaboration with business stakeholders and maintaining comprehensive technical documentation.

Key Responsibilities

Core Development & Feature Delivery

• Design, develop, and maintain core platform modules using PHP 8+ and Object-Oriented Programming principles.
• Build and manage CRUD functionality for users, transactions, geo-logs, and verification records.
• Develop secure, scalable RESTful APIs for high-volume transactions.
• Implement secure authentication using PHP Sanctum or Passport.
• Integrate external services such as M-PESA and Co-operative Bank APIs for escrow functionality.
• Develop and maintain complex backend business logic.
• Commit all development work to the company GitLab repository daily.

Architecture, Innovation & Technical Leadership

• Contribute to platform architecture and recommend scalable solutions such as PHP microservices and cloud-native deployments.
• Research and prototype emerging technologies including blockchain and Artificial Intelligence solutions.
• Ensure platform compliance with the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019 and Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) integration requirements.

Collaboration & Documentation

• Work closely with Business Analysts, Product Owners, and stakeholders to convert business requirements into technical solutions.
• Create and maintain API, codebase, and system architecture documentation using Swagger, PHP API Documentation, and Confluence.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants should possess:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• Professional certifications will be an added advantage.
• Minimum 5 years of backend software development experience.
• At least 3 years' advanced experience using PHP 8.2+ with Laravel or Symfony.
• Strong expertise in Object-Oriented Programming (OOP).
