Job Description

Branch is seeking a motivated and technically capable Android Engineer Intern to join its engineering team and contribute to the development and improvement of its Android application. This internship provides an opportunity for an early-career developer to gain practical experience working on a production mobile application used by real customers.

The successful candidate will work closely with Android engineers, Product Managers, Engineering Managers, Designers and backend teams to develop new features, improve application performance and deliver reliable, user-friendly mobile experiences. The intern will have the opportunity to take ownership of assigned features and contribute throughout the development lifecycle, from implementation and testing to release.

The role will involve building and improving features for the Branch Android application using modern Android development practices. The intern will contribute to creating responsive interfaces, improving application stability and helping ensure that the application provides a smooth experience for customers.

A key responsibility will be working with backend services and APIs. The successful candidate will assist with integrating REST APIs and supporting new product functionality that requires communication between the mobile application and backend systems. Exposure to third-party integrations such as payment systems, authentication, analytics and messaging platforms will also be valuable.

The Android Engineer Intern will participate in code reviews, technical discussions and engineering collaboration. The role provides an opportunity to learn from experienced developers while contributing ideas and suggestions for improving the application's code quality, maintainability and overall architecture.

The successful candidate will also assist with identifying and resolving application issues. This includes debugging crashes, improving performance and contributing to application stability and reliability. Candidates should have an interest in understanding how mobile applications perform in real-world environments and how technical improvements can enhance customer experience.

The role will require collaboration with Product and Design teams to understand requirements and translate them into practical technical solutions. The intern will be expected to communicate clearly, ask questions when necessary and contribute to the successful delivery of assigned projects.

Branch also values modern AI-assisted development workflows. The successful candidate should be comfortable using AI tools to improve productivity while maintaining responsibility for the quality, security, correctness and maintainability of the resulting code. Candidates should understand that AI-generated code requires appropriate testing, review and technical judgment.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants should have experience building native Android applications, preferably applications that have been used by real users or meaningful open-source projects. A strong foundation in computer science fundamentals and knowledge of Android development using Kotlin are important.

Candidates should have an understanding of modern Android development, particularly Jetpack Compose, responsive UI development, UI state management and modern Android architecture and design patterns. Experience working with REST APIs and backend services is also required or highly desirable.

The ideal candidate should have an understanding of Android application performance, crash debugging, testing, reliability and maintainable code. Familiarity with third-party integrations involving payments, authentication, analytics or messaging will be an added advantage.

Branch is looking for individuals who are curious, proactive, analytical and willing to learn beyond their immediate area of expertise. Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, teamwork and the ability to work independently are important.
