Job Description

The Ollessos National Polytechnic (ONP) is seeking a qualified and experienced Technician – Plumbing to support its technical training and institutional operations. The successful candidate will provide practical technical support during training, maintain plumbing workshop facilities and equipment, and undertake plumbing repairs and maintenance across the institution.

The Technician will play an important role in ensuring that plumbing training activities are properly supported through the availability, safe use and maintenance of appropriate tools, equipment and materials. The successful candidate will work closely with trainers and other technical staff to ensure that workshop activities are conducted efficiently and in accordance with established health and safety requirements.

A key responsibility will be providing technical support during training. The Technician will assist in ensuring that learners and trainers have access to the necessary tools, equipment and materials required for practical training. This will require good knowledge of plumbing workshop operations and the ability to provide practical assistance when required.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for maintaining workshop inventories. This will involve receiving and issuing tools and materials, keeping accurate inventory records and monitoring stock levels to ensure that sufficient materials are available for training and maintenance activities. The Technician will be expected to maintain proper accountability for institutional tools, equipment and other workshop resources.

Health and safety will be an important part of the position. The Technician will observe and enforce applicable health and safety procedures within the workshop and during plumbing-related activities. The successful candidate will ensure that tools and equipment are used correctly and safely and that potential hazards are identified and addressed promptly.

The Technician will also ensure the proper usage and safe custody of kits, tools and equipment. This includes maintaining equipment in good working condition, ensuring that tools are returned after use and reporting damaged or faulty equipment to the relevant authority.

Another key responsibility will be undertaking repairs and maintenance within the plumbing area of specialisation. The successful candidate will assist in maintaining institutional plumbing systems and facilities, identifying faults and carrying out appropriate repairs to help ensure reliable water and plumbing services across the institution.

The Technician may also be required to provide procurement specifications for workshop equipment and materials to be purchased. This will require an understanding of the technical requirements of plumbing tools, equipment and supplies and the ability to provide clear and appropriate specifications.

Maintaining general cleanliness and order within the work area will also be part of the role. The Technician will ensure that the plumbing workshop and associated work areas remain clean, organised and safe for staff and students.

About The Ollessos National Polytechnic

The Ollessos National Polytechnic (ONP) is a National Polytechnic located in Nandi County and is ISO 9001:2015 certified. The institution is sponsored by the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) and operates on a 43-acre campus along the Kapsabet–Nabkoi Road.

The institution has its roots in a community vision dating back to 1975, when the local community of Lessos sought to establish a technical secondary school. Today, the institution provides technical and vocational education and training and supports the development of practical skills in various technical fields.

The Plumbing Technician will therefore contribute to the institution's technical training environment by ensuring that plumbing workshops, equipment and facilities are properly maintained and available for practical learning.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must have a Diploma in Building Technology and a Craft Certificate in Plumbing. Candidates must also have at least three years of relevant work experience in plumbing or a related technical environment.

Computer literacy is required, as the successful candidate may be expected to maintain inventory records, prepare technical information and perform other administrative tasks using computer-based systems.

The ideal candidate should have practical plumbing skills, good knowledge of workshop tools and equipment, and the ability to diagnose and undertake routine plumbing repairs and maintenance. Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and commitment to workplace health and safety are also important.

Candidates should be reliable, responsible and capable of working effectively with trainers, students, technical staff and other employees. The ability to maintain accurate records and properly account for institutional tools, equipment and materials will be essential.
