Job Overview

The Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) is seeking a highly analytical and experienced Internal Auditor to join its team in Nairobi. This full-time onsite role is ideal for a finance professional with strong auditing, risk management, and compliance expertise who is passionate about promoting accountability and good governance.

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the successful candidate will provide independent assurance on the effectiveness of financial reporting, internal controls, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and risk management across the organization.

Position Summary

The Internal Auditor will be responsible for planning and conducting risk-based internal audits, reviewing financial and operational processes, assessing internal controls, identifying organizational risks, and providing recommendations that strengthen governance, accountability, and compliance with donor and statutory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Audit Planning & Execution

  • Develop and implement comprehensive annual risk-based audit plans.
  • Conduct internal audits to evaluate financial and operational effectiveness.
  • Monitor the implementation of audit recommendations and corrective actions.

Financial & Compliance Reviews

  • Review financial records, accounting systems, and operational processes.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, donor agreements, organizational policies, and applicable laws.
  • Verify the accuracy and reliability of financial reporting.

Internal Controls & Risk Management

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of internal control systems.
  • Identify weaknesses, inefficiencies, and areas requiring improvement.
  • Conduct organizational risk assessments and recommend practical risk mitigation measures.
  • Safeguard organizational assets through proactive control assessments.

Reporting & Advisory

  • Prepare comprehensive audit reports for the Board of Directors.
  • Present audit findings and practical recommendations for improvement.
  • Work closely with departmental teams to monitor implementation of agreed action plans.

Capacity Building

  • Train and support staff on internal controls, financial ethics, fraud prevention, and compliance requirements.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement throughout the organization.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants should possess:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Professional certification such as CPA, ACCA, CIA, or an equivalent qualification.
  • 5–7 years of relevant experience in internal auditing, external auditing, risk management, or financial oversight.
  • Strong understanding of internal audit standards, risk management frameworks, and internal control systems.
  • Knowledge of donor-funded project compliance and financial regulations will be an added advantage.
  • Excellent analytical, investigative, and report-writing skills.
  • High ethical standards, integrity, and professional judgment.
