Job Overview

Kirinyaga University is seeking a qualified and experienced ICT Technician to support the University's information and communication technology infrastructure, systems and users.

Job Purpose

The ICT Technician will support the University's ICT operations by ensuring that computer equipment, networks, software, systems and other technology resources remain functional, secure and accessible to authorized users.

The role requires practical technical support as well as participation in the implementation of ICT policies, digital solutions, connectivity infrastructure and information security measures.

Key Responsibilities

ICT Systems and Policy Implementation

The ICT Technician will be responsible for:

Implementing ICT policies, strategies, regulations, standards and procedures.

Supporting the implementation of the University's ICT plans and technical requirements.

Applying established procedures when managing ICT equipment, systems and users.

Supporting standardization of ICT processes across the University.

Contributing to the implementation of flexible IT strategies that support the deployment and scaling of University services.

Hardware and Software Support

The successful candidate will provide hands-on technical support by:

Repairing ICT equipment and associated peripherals.

Diagnosing hardware and software-related problems.

Configuring and testing computer hardware.

Configuring networking software and operating system software.

Installing necessary hardware upgrades.

Installing and maintaining required software upgrades.

Ensuring computers and other ICT equipment remain operational.

Providing technical assistance to users experiencing computer-related problems.

Network Support

The ICT Technician will support the University's network infrastructure, including:

Implementing and supporting Local Area Networks (LANs).

Supporting Wide Area Networks (WANs).

Troubleshooting network connectivity problems.

Helping maintain reliable connectivity to University systems.

Supporting access to online resources and digital services.

Identifying and addressing network-related technical issues.

Supporting the continued availability of ICT services across the institution.

User and Active Directory Administration

The role will also involve user account management, including:

Creating new users in Active Directory.

Following established policies and procedures when creating and managing accounts.

Supporting authorized users with access to University ICT systems.

Providing technical guidance to computer users.

Assisting users with ICT systems and applications.

Maintaining appropriate user access and system security practices.

Digital Transformation and ICT Solutions

The ICT Technician will participate in the University's digital initiatives by:

Implementing digital solutions such as automation tools.

Supporting the use of cloud services.

Contributing to data analytics initiatives where required.

Supporting the digitization of University records and procedures.

Implementing frameworks and formats designed to standardize digitization processes.

Supporting technology solutions that improve operational efficiency.

Website and Customer-Facing Systems

The successful candidate will also support the University's online presence and customer-facing technology systems by:

Updating the University's website when required.

Supporting other customer-facing systems.

Ensuring online information systems are maintained appropriately.

Providing technical assistance for systems used by students, staff and other stakeholders.

ICT Security and Disaster Recovery

The ICT Technician will contribute to protecting the University's technology resources by:

Implementing security systems designed to protect ICT assets and systems.

Supporting ICT security measures and established security procedures.

Contributing to the implementation of the University's ICT business disaster recovery strategy.

Supporting measures aimed at maintaining availability of ICT services in the event of disruptions.

Following appropriate procedures for protecting ICT equipment, systems and information.

Technical Support and User Training

The position requires regular interaction with computer users. Duties will include:

Providing technical support to University staff and users.

Guiding users on the proper use of University ICT systems.

Providing basic ICT training where required.

Responding to user-reported technical issues.

Helping users resolve hardware, software and connectivity challenges.

Keeping users informed about appropriate ICT procedures and practices.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants should have:

A Diploma in one of the following fields:

Information Technology

Computer Science

Software Engineering

Computer Engineering

Information Systems

Business Information Technology

Or another relevant ICT-related field.

At least three years of relevant work experience.

Experience working in a busy office environment.

Practical knowledge of computer hardware and peripherals.

Knowledge of operating systems and software installation.

Understanding of computer networking and connectivity.

Knowledge of user administration and Active Directory.

Ability to provide technical support to computer users.

Ability to troubleshoot ICT equipment and systems.
