Job Overview
Chuka University is seeking a qualified and experienced Cyber Security Officer to safeguard the University's information systems, networks and digital assets against cybersecurity threats. The successful candidate will support the implementation of security controls, monitor systems for suspicious activities, respond to security incidents and help ensure compliance with relevant cybersecurity and data protection requirements.
The position will work under the Head of Department, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and will play an important role in strengthening the University's overall information security environment.
Key Responsibilities
The Cyber Security Officer will monitor, detect, investigate and respond to cybersecurity incidents while implementing appropriate controls to protect institutional systems, networks and data. The role will involve conducting vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, security audits and risk assessments to identify weaknesses and recommend suitable mitigation measures.
The successful candidate will monitor network traffic for suspicious activities and security breaches and maintain security technologies such as firewalls, antivirus solutions, intrusion detection and prevention systems and endpoint protection tools.
The officer will also contribute to the development, implementation and enforcement of cybersecurity policies, procedures and standards. They will manage identity and access controls, including user accounts, authentication and authorization systems, while ensuring that security practices comply with applicable laws, regulations, standards and institutional policies.
Other responsibilities will include investigating security incidents, preparing incident reports, supporting disaster recovery and business continuity initiatives, and conducting cybersecurity awareness and training programmes for staff. The officer will also keep up to date with emerging cyber threats, vulnerabilities and cybersecurity best practices.
Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants should have a Bachelor's degree in Cyber Security, Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems or a related field from a recognized institution.
Candidates must have at least two years of relevant post-qualification experience in cybersecurity, information security or ICT security within a busy institution or organization.
The ideal candidate should have knowledge of network security protocols and technologies, including TCP/IP, VPNs, DNS and firewalls, as well as practical experience in vulnerability assessment and penetration testing.
Knowledge of Windows, Linux, virtualization and cloud security environments is required. Candidates should also understand endpoint security, antivirus technologies, encryption and Identity and Access Management (IAM) principles.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, incident response and report-writing skills are important for the position. Applicants should also demonstrate good communication, interpersonal and teamwork abilities.
Professional certifications such as Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), CompTIA Security+, Cisco CyberOps, CISSP or CISM will be an added advantage. Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell or Bash will also be beneficial.
