The Nyeri National Polytechnic is hiring a Driver in Nyeri. Applicants should have KCSE D (Plain), a valid driving licence, at least five years of driving experience, a valid PSV institutional licence and relevant driver training certifications.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Nyeri National Polytechnic is seeking a qualified and experienced Driver to provide safe, reliable and timely transportation services for the institution. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating assigned vehicles, maintaining vehicle safety and ensuring that transportation services are delivered efficiently.

The role requires an experienced driver with a strong understanding of road safety, vehicle maintenance, traffic regulations and responsible driving practices.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Driver will be responsible for providing transportation services to support the day-to-day operations of The Nyeri National Polytechnic. The successful candidate will operate institutional vehicles safely and efficiently while transporting staff, students, visitors, equipment and other authorized passengers or materials as required.

The driver will be expected to ensure that assigned vehicles are operated in accordance with traffic laws, institutional policies and established safety procedures. Safety of passengers, vehicles and other road users will remain a key priority at all times.

The position requires timely and reliable transportation services. The Driver will therefore be expected to report for assigned duties on time, follow approved schedules and routes, and ensure that passengers and materials reach their destinations safely and within the required timelines.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and general condition of assigned vehicles. Regular checks should be undertaken to identify mechanical, electrical, tyre, fluid and other issues that could affect vehicle performance or safety.

Any vehicle faults or maintenance requirements should be reported promptly to the relevant authority. The Driver should also ensure that vehicles are serviced and maintained according to the required schedules and that all necessary documentation is kept up to date.

The Driver will be expected to demonstrate adequate knowledge of the Highway Code and apply safe driving practices when operating institutional vehicles. This includes observing speed limits, traffic signs, road markings and other applicable road regulations.

The role may involve driving in different road and weather conditions. The successful candidate should therefore demonstrate sound judgement, defensive driving skills and the ability to respond appropriately to unexpected situations.

The Driver will also be responsible for ensuring the security and safety of vehicles while they are on and off the road. This includes taking appropriate precautions when parking, securing vehicle keys and reporting any incidents involving institutional vehicles.

Good communication and interpersonal skills will be important because the Driver may interact with staff, students, visitors, suppliers and other stakeholders. The successful candidate should be courteous, professional and respectful while representing the institution.

Where required, the Driver may assist with basic vehicle-related matters and report any mechanical concerns to the responsible department. Knowledge of motor vehicle mechanics will be an added advantage.

The successful candidate should demonstrate integrity, reliability, punctuality and a strong commitment to institutional policies. They should also be capable of working independently while maintaining professional standards and ensuring that all assigned transportation duties are completed effectively.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide safe and reliable transportation services.

Drive institutional vehicles as assigned.

Transport authorized staff, students, visitors and materials.

Ensure timely transportation according to approved schedules.

Observe all traffic laws and road safety requirements.

Maintain high standards of defensive driving.

Conduct routine checks of assigned vehicles.

Report mechanical faults and maintenance requirements promptly.

Ensure vehicles are clean and properly maintained.

Monitor vehicle service and maintenance requirements.

Maintain appropriate vehicle documentation.

Ensure the security of vehicles when parked.

Report accidents, incidents and vehicle-related issues.

Demonstrate good knowledge of the Highway Code.

Observe speed limits and road regulations.

Maintain professionalism when dealing with passengers and stakeholders.

Support institutional transportation activities as assigned.

Ensure the safety and security of passengers and vehicles.

Perform other relevant duties assigned by management.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

KCSE mean grade D (Plain) or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.

Valid driving licence without current endorsements for the relevant vehicle classes.

Valid Class B, C, D1, D2 and D3 driving licence without current endorsements.

At least five years of active driving experience.

Experience working in a learning institution will be an advantage.

Valid PSV Institutional Driver's Licence.

NTSA PSV Drivers' Refresher Course Certificate.

Passed the Occupational Trade Test for Drivers.

First Aid Certificate Course lasting at least one week.

Adequate knowledge of the Highway Code.

Valid Certificate of Good Conduct.

ADDITIONAL ADVANTAGE

A Grade Test in Motor Vehicle Mechanics will be an added advantage. Knowledge of basic vehicle mechanics can help the successful candidate identify potential mechanical problems and report them before they develop into major faults.

KEY COMPETENCIES

The ideal candidate should be a responsible, disciplined and safety-conscious driver. Strong attention to detail is essential when inspecting vehicles, following traffic regulations and ensuring passenger safety.

The candidate should demonstrate excellent time management and reliability because institutional transportation often involves scheduled activities and appointments. Punctuality and the ability to follow instructions are therefore important.

Good communication and interpersonal skills are also required. The Driver should interact professionally with passengers, staff and other stakeholders while maintaining confidentiality and respect.

The successful candidate should also demonstrate integrity and accountability when handling institutional vehicles and property. They should be capable of working under minimal supervision and responding appropriately to unexpected situations on the road.
