Job Overview

Two Max Group is seeking an experienced Backend Developer – Go & PostgreSQL to join its remote engineering team in Kenya. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing and operating backend systems that support client-facing applications and internal business operations.

This is an opportunity for a backend engineer who is comfortable taking ownership of systems from development through production. The role involves working with Go, PostgreSQL, REST/gRPC APIs, Docker, CI, monitoring and integrations, while collaborating with a distributed team across Kenya, the Philippines and the United States.

The position offers mostly flexible and asynchronous working arrangements, with a required 2–3 hour weekday overlap between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM EAT for activities such as standups and pairing.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop and operate reliable backend services using Go.

Build and maintain REST and gRPC APIs.

Develop background workers and backend integrations.

Design and maintain PostgreSQL database schemas.

Create and manage database migrations.

Optimize SQL queries and database performance.

Maintain data integrity and reliability across backend systems.

Work with sensitive healthcare-adjacent data responsibly.

Apply appropriate security and privacy practices when handling sensitive information.

Deploy applications to production using Docker-based environments.

Participate in continuous integration and deployment processes.

Monitor production systems and investigate application issues.

Respond pragmatically to production incidents and technical problems.

Collaborate with Flutter developers on API contracts and backend integration.

Work directly with US leadership and other members of the remote engineering team.

Participate in technical discussions, code reviews and engineering planning.

Use AI coding tools such as Claude and GitHub Copilot to improve development productivity while applying sound engineering judgment.

Review AI-assisted code carefully to ensure quality, security and maintainability.

Maintain clear technical documentation and API specifications.

Contribute to a disciplined software development and code review process.

Take ownership of backend systems throughout their development and operational lifecycle.

Qualifications and Requirements

3–5+ years of backend development experience.

At least 1–2 years of production experience with Go, or strong production backend experience in another programming language combined with substantial demonstrable Go development work.

Strong knowledge of Go programming and backend application development.

Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining production systems.

Strong SQL knowledge and practical PostgreSQL experience.

Ability to discuss and implement database indexing strategies.

Practical experience with database transactions and migrations.

Experience deploying applications to production environments.

Knowledge of Docker-based deployment.

Experience with logs, monitoring and production troubleshooting.

Understanding of REST APIs and/or gRPC.

Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.

Clear written English for API documentation, pull requests and asynchronous communication.

Ability to work independently in a distributed remote environment.

Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Good engineering judgment and commitment to code quality.

Ability to work with sensitive information responsibly.

Willingness to learn and work with new technologies.

Additional Advantages

Working Environment

The position is remote and provides a largely flexible and asynchronous working environment. However, candidates should be available for a 2–3 hour overlap window from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM EAT on weekdays to participate in standups, pairing sessions and other collaborative activities.

The successful candidate will work with a distributed team across different countries and should therefore be comfortable communicating through written documentation, remote meetings, pull requests and asynchronous updates.
